How to Overcome Panic Attacks
March 16th, 2010
Harry Constantine Panic attacks are often a serious problem for the people who are suffering from them. In the more serious cases people become housebound and terribly lonely due to their panic attacks.
Once you have overcome your panic attacks you can get on with your life. Many people who have regular panic attacks just wish to be able to get on with their lives.
Here are some straightforward techniques that will facilitate you to beat panic attacks and stop them from being so frequent.
Firstly, when you begin to panic your breathing becomes quicker and shallower. When you are in a very relaxed state focus on your breathing and teach yourself to breath deeply and evenly from the bottom of your stomach. You want this type of breathing to become natural to you therefore you are doing it most of the time.
When you feel a panic attack starting up you have to instantly focus on your breathing and begin breathing in this deep and regular manner. If necessary stop what you’re doing, sit down and shut your eyes and pay attention to your breathing to make it regular. Often this can be enough to get rid of your panic attack completely and stop it from happening.
After some practise this will become second nature to you and when you start to panic you will automatically breath deeply and relax, which will quell the feelings of panic. To start with you will need to ask your friends to remind to you breath this way or produce another cue to prompt you.
Practising relaxation or self hypnosis techniques can also help you deal with panic attacks. You can teach yourself self hypnosis or attend yoga or meditation classes.
Panic attacks come from the feeling of being out of control, worry and not being able to cope. These all create stress in you and stop you from thinking straight. Through these relaxation techniques you’ll release the stress and prevent the panic attack from taking over.
When you understand what triggers a panic attack then you’ll be in a position to start avoiding those situations. For the triggers that you simply cannot avoid you wish to alter how you feel regarding them. There are a range of techniques you could use to try and do this, but one of the most effective is for you to visualise yourself just before you enter the situation feeling relaxed. Keep that relaxed feeling as you go through the situation in your mind.
As your sub-conscious mind doesn’t understand the difference between what you imagine and what is real (just imagine one thing that hurt from the past to check the reality behind this) you will amendment how you are feeling regarding those situations.
Do this visualisation enough and you’ll realize that the things that used to cause panic only cause you to be relaxed and calm. It can be a strange feeling when this happens, but it’s a nice one.
With the techniques you have simply read you’ll be able to overcome panic attacks. Be prepared to be patient and to provide yourself some time and you’ll see nice results.

Drug Abuse : Cure Or Prevention
March 1st, 2010
Stella Robinson Families who have mentally ill relatives whose problems are compounded by substance abuse face problems of enormous proportions. Mental health services are not well prepared to deal with patients having both afflictions.
Often only one of the two problems is identified. If both are recognized, the individual may be bounced back and forth between services for mental illness and those for substance abuse, or they may be refused treatment by each of them.
While the picture regarding dual diagnosis has not been very positive at this point, there are now signs that the problem is being recognized and there is an increasing number of programs trying to address the treatment needs of people with both problems.
Research studies are beginning to help us understand the scope of the problem. It is now generally agreed that as much as 50 percent of the mentally ill population also has a substance abuse problem. The drug most commonly used is alcohol, followed by marijuana and cocaine. Prescription drugs such as tranquilizers and sleeping medicines may also be abused.
It is now reported that both families of mentally ill relatives and mental health professionals underestimate the amount of drug dependency among people in their care. There may be several reasons for this. It may be difficult to separate the behaviors due to mental illness from those due to drugs.
There may be a degree of denial of the problem because we have had so little to offer people with the combined illnesses. Caregivers might prefer not to acknowledge such a frightening problem when so little hope has been offered.
Craving and compulsion to use a drug lead to using it in larger amounts, more frequently, or over a longer period than was intended when use began. Psychological dependence involves giving up social, occupational, or recreational activities because of drug use, as well as persistent use despite knowing that the drug is likely causing a physical or mental problem.
